Creating a baseline

Starting this experience is one that I didn’t think I would ever do. The thought of just writing for me at times sounded exhausting or scary. Exposing my thoughts and feelings on the issues of the day was just never an option for me. Though many of my friends and family would be shocked by me not sharing my opinions.

But I have realized as I have gotten older, we all have to find positive ways to express our thoughts and opinions for debate in the public sphere. We can’t afford to be scared any longer while we watch our world rapidly change for either the better or the worse (which may largely depend on what political or societal view we tend to take).

But before you start any new adventure, you must make sure that you have the tools in place to succeed. You may be thinking what tools am I discussing. The tools I am discussing are what you can expect from my new writing experience.

Who am I?

First, an understanding of who I am. I am a political scientist by education and a communication professional by trade. I worked in the political/advocacy arena for nearly seven years. That experience opened my eyes to the inner workings of state government. That also influenced how I view various issues today.

In my roles, I not only learned the real-world applications of my education, but I was able to hone my skills as a communications professional which led me to my current role and opened many doors to me.

Today, I do not work in the government or political structure. I am still extremely interested in current events and the role that politics and government play in our society. But I am also interested in the responsibility of us as members of said society and the role we play in making it “better”.

What will I do?

While I will partially be kind of feeling out what my lane will be, this blog will largely focus on what is going on in our world and our society. We have to take a look at what is currently happening or has happened in the past if we ever want to learn from it.

So what does that mean? Well, we shall see as we take on this journey together. But I will say this will not be just a rehashing of news. We have too many people screaming about the actual events on our TV and phone screens.

Instead, I will work to understand issues at a deeper level. Work to understand where I stand on the issue and why I stand there. I have core beliefs that I don’t think will change through this process, but I am open to it.

Book Reviews: One thing about how we understand our current society is by reading other people’s content and then discussing it. That is why I am planning on reading various books and then providing my thoughts and reactions to it.
The Armchair Socrates: In my college career, I learned that my real passion for politics came from a foundation in political philosophy. So I will provide overviews of different thinkers and philosophers and how they impact my thinking and influence our society today.
The OMG You Need This Corner: This will be where I provide recommendations for another creator be it a podcast, blog, book or some other type of content. My recommendations may be just one episode of a podcast to spark your thoughts or a book recommendation that didn’t get the full book review treatment. This will help you understand the type of content I consume and how it impacts my thinking.

So here we go, it is time to begin the journey. I hope you enjoy this as much as I believe I will. Of course, please feel welcome to share your feedback. Discuss your feelings on the issues I highlight. We can only improve our society together when we honestly analyze and understand each other’s viewpoints and then move forward with our new frame of understanding.
